Description
A walk through Antwerp, told through the buildings themselves. I'm Luc, born and raised in Antwerp. On this private walk, I'll take you through the city center and show you what the facades are actually telling you — stories that most visitors, and most tour guides, walk straight past without a second look. There's no fixed script. We go at your pace, and I'll happily go off on a tangent if something catches your eye. Three stories you'll hear along the way: The Guild Hall That Wanted to Be a Church. Stand in front of the Vleeshuis — the old Butchers' Guild Hall — and you'd think it needed a blessing. It wasn't built for prayer, though. It was built for pork, beef, and civic pride, by a guild wealthy enough to build something that could rival the church next door. The Blacksmith Who Repainted His Life for Love. Somewhere along these streets is the story of a man who spent his life working iron — until he fell for a woman whose father would only give her hand to a painter. So he put down the hammer and picked up a brush instead. Whether that was love or ambition winning out is something we can debate over a beer afterward. The Merchants Who Left Their Story in Stone. The old Hanseatic League — a network of merchant traders from northern Germany — had their own trading house here in Antwerp. It's covered in carved figures, many of them nude, each one representing something about trade and shipping. According to local legend, one figure was modeled after the sculptor's own mistress. Along the way, we'll also pass the city's oldest building, walk through a medieval alley and the old salt and sugar quay. We'll take a close look at the eagles and shields carved into the facade of the City Hall (Stadhuis) — right there in plain sight if you know to look — and stand at what was once the world's first stock exchange building. This is a private tour — just your group and me. No script, no rushing, no sharing the sidewalk with a crowd of strangers.
